Siliguri, India: In a move aimed at strengthening women’s economic empowerment and promoting grassroots entrepreneurship, the West Bengal government has inaugurated a new Karmatirtha Haat in Siliguri. The initiative has been undertaken under the vision of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to create sustainable livelihood opportunities, particularly for women engaged in handicrafts and small-scale production.
The marketplace, developed at a cost of ₹7.8 million, is located in front of the Bengal Safari area under the Dabgram–I Gram Panchayat. The newly opened Karmatirtha Haat features 14 permanent stalls designed to provide artisans and self-help groups with a structured platform to showcase and sell their products.
The inaugural ceremony was led by Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb, who described the project as a significant step toward opening new horizons for women. Addressing the gathering, he urged women entrepreneurs to come forward and take advantage of the opportunities created by the state government.

He added that the state government is planning several new initiatives in the coming days that are expected to have a strong and practical impact on women’s livelihoods. According to him, the Karmatirtha Haat already houses a diverse range of handcrafted products, reflecting the rich skills of local artisans.
Observers say the initiative aligns with broader development goals focused on inclusive growth, local entrepreneurship, and women-led economic participation, positioning the project as a model for community-driven development at the grassroots level.
