Republic Day 2026 will witness a historic and symbolic moment at Kartavya Path as Simran Bala, a young officer from Jammu and Kashmir, is set to lead an all-male contingent of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) during the grand parade. This marks the first time a woman officer will command a fully male CRPF unit at the national ceremony.
Simran Bala’s selection is being hailed as a major milestone for gender equality and women’s leadership in India’s armed and paramilitary forces. Her appointment reflects not symbolism alone, but years of dedication, professional excellence, and operational experience in challenging regions.
Hailing from the border district of Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir, Simran Bala grew up in a region deeply influenced by security challenges and national service. This background played a crucial role in shaping her decision to serve the nation in uniform.
Academically strong, Simran Bala pursued higher studies in Political Science before clearing the highly competitive UPSC CAPF examination, through which she joined the CRPF as an officer. During her training at the CRPF Academy in Gurugram, she consistently stood out for her leadership qualities, physical endurance, and tactical understanding. She was later recognized as one of the top-performing officer trainees of her batch.
Her professional journey includes postings in left-wing extremism-affected areas of Chhattisgarh, where she played an active role in anti-insurgency operations. Senior officials note that she demonstrated exceptional command skills under pressure, earning the respect of both peers and subordinates.
According to CRPF sources, Simran Bala was chosen to lead the Republic Day contingent purely on merit. “She embodies discipline, confidence, and leadership. Her gender was never a consideration—her capability was,” a senior CRPF officer stated.
